Biden Marks Anniversary Of Tulsa Race Massacre

President Biden is marking the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre. The President traveled to Tulsa's Greenwood Cultural Center and said the victims of that dark time deserve ongoing recognition and respect. He added, "Literal hell was unleashed" during the massacre. Biden met with the three known remaining survivors of the massacre before his speech. White mobs attacked the city's Greenwood district on May 31st and June 1st of 1921. Hundreds of Black Americans were killed and numerous businesses were destroyed.

The thriving Greenwood business district had been known as Black Wall Street. Biden insisted the tale of what happened was a story "seen in the mirror dimly" for too long. Biden was the first sitting American President to visit the site. He said he came to help "fill the silence." Biden noted that no one was held accountable for the massacre and said the actual death count has remained a mystery for too long. He added, "While darkness can hide much, it erases nothing." The President said all great nations "come to terms with their dark sides."
