I Didn't Speak At The Teacher's Rally. . .

I would have started with one word.  "Thanks".

Thank you teachers for the important roll you play in educating the youth of Oklahoma.  Thank you for caring about the education of the youth of Oklahoma.  Thank you for your patience in the slow wheels of government.  Thank you for coming here today and making your voice known to the legislature.

Thank you legislature for hearing our cries and working quickly and efficiently to come to a resolution.  Think of what just a little more could do.

Finally thank you parents for your patience throughout this process.  Thank you for your support thus far, we will make you proud and be good stewards of the money you have entrusted to us.  Thank you for understanding we needed to take a school day to make our voices heard.

Now, as our voice had been heard, the legislature has acted, and the future is bright, let us go back to work.

At this point the rotten eggs and tomatoes would begin to fly, (maybe some bullets), and I would have to be escorted off the stage to a boisterous round of boos.

I do say to the teachers, if you take much more time off you will ruin any future chances of negotiation on ANY issue.  You will lose the support of the parents and legislators for many months to come.  It is the end of the session, end of the school year, parents are planning vacations, legislators are readying for the election and perception is you got your raise.  Get back to work.
