Dr. Ivan Holmes warms up the crowd for the annual Lupus Walk at the OKC Zoo
In 1954 my Uncle, 15 at the time, sat down under a shady tree and fell asleep. My Grandfather asked what was wrong? It was unlike Donald to get tired in the middle of the day. Two years later Uncle Donald died of what we now know is Lupus. Twenty years later my father died of Lupus. Their mother, my grandmother, suffered debilitating arthritis we now know is directly related to Lupus.
Lupus is an auto-immune disease that causes your body to attack itself. It can mask itself as RA. Unlike my Grandmother, Uncle, and Father, now if caught Lupus can be reduced to a chronic condition. YES it is genetic and passed on from the mother so it has not shown up in my generation of the family.
Join me this weekend for the annual Lupus Walk to benefit the Lupus Foundation of Oklahoma. It will be at the OKC Zoo, Saturday June 3 at 8 Am. Sign up here, or between 6-8 A at the Zoo. See you this Saturday!
