Bethany police officer cleared in fatal shooting

A Bethany police officer has been cleared of wrongdoing in a fatal shooting that happened in February.

Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater ruled Officer Matthew Branscum shot James Stephen McMullen, 46, in self-defense and, therefore, the shooting was justified.

However, in a letter to Bethany Police Chief Phil Cole clearing Branscum, Prater criticized the actions of police supervisors at the shooting scene and wrote that the supervisors could have done more to "lessen the probability that a deadly force incident would result."

Branscum has been on paid administrative leave since the shooting and will return to active duty next week.
