The United Football League (UFL) has announced that Oklahoma City will be home to a new professional football team starting in the 2028 spring season. This decision is part of the league's broader strategy to expand its presence and bring high-quality football to new markets. The yet-to-be-named team will play in the newly constructed MAPS 4 Multipurpose Stadium, which will seat over 10,000 fans and is set to open in early 2028.
The UFL, which currently features eight teams including the Dallas Renegades, is excited to bring its brand of spring football to Oklahoma. Mike Repole, UFL co-owner, stated, "Oklahoma lives and breathes football, so bringing the UFL to Oklahoma City was an easy decision." The league's president and CEO, Russ Brandon, echoed this sentiment, highlighting Oklahoma City's rich football culture and its proven support for major league sports.
The new stadium, designed by Populous, will be a state-of-the-art venue located in downtown Oklahoma City. It will serve as a hub for various events, including professional soccer, concerts, and rodeos, in addition to hosting the UFL team. The stadium's development is part of a larger plan to create a multi-use cultural district in the city.
Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt expressed enthusiasm for the UFL's arrival, stating, "We love sports and we love football, so we think this should be a great fit." The team's name, colors, and branding will be unveiled in collaboration with the local community.
The UFL's expansion into Oklahoma City is part of a long-term plan to grow to 16 teams by 2035. As the league continues to expand, it aims to provide fans with an exciting and modern football experience.
